Helen Wiseman is a Saffron Walden-based illustrator and artist. After graduating from the. Falmouth College of Arts, she worked illustrating children’s books, and fresh from the British Craft Fair in Harrogate will be bringing some of her beautiful watercolour designs to exhibit at Design Essentials this summer and we will be providing some free creative fun for children. So stay tuned. In the meantime though here is my chat with Helen.
What inspires your works?
It sounds clichéd, but I get inspiration from everywhere! I’ll see or hear something and think, ‘look, that would make a nice picture…’, or a friend will say, “you should do a picture of a dragon”. So I do! I do love a boat and a sea side theme, though…
Is there an element of art you enjoy working with the most?
It has to be painting – especially with watercolour. I’ve tried oils in the past, but they take too long to dry, and I don’t have the patience! However, I am very keen to try my hand at printing at some point in the future.
What’s the best and worst thing about being an artist?
The best thing? That sense of extreme satisfaction when an idea not only comes together, but goes right. And the worst is having a brilliant idea that doesn’t go right!
What has been the work that you are most proud of?
I’m quite proud of my dinosaurs, I have to say. Most recently, though, I have had my designs printed onto a children’s chess set by Geoffrey Parker toys. That was pretty satisfying!
Favourite Take That member?
I intensely dislike Robbie Williams, so it’s a toss up between Gary Barlow and the small chap…
G&T, or a cold lager on a hot day.
thanks to Helen for this and look forward to some hot days.
