We’re delighted to announce we’ve been featured in The Guardian in their ‘A first look at the Small Business Saturday 100’ article.
Small Business Saturday, a non-profit organisation that aims to promote local businesses, will be using its social media channels to promote one small business a week starting from this weekend until Small Business Saturday itself, which this year is on December 3rd.
This year there’s a huge variety of small businesses being promoted, from toy shops to agricultural services, and we feel honoured to be featured along with them! Wendy submitted her application for Small Business Saturday 100 almost two months ago on the deadline day. She had wanted to submit her application sooner but due to her being so busy setting up two other services for Design Essentials . One an interior design service for the shop and the other an import company . We are therefore very delighted that the shop was chosen and are very excited about our chosen day to be featured. ( which will keep Wendy even busier. )
Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement of our featured day – we can’t wait to share it with you all!
Design Essentials was absolutely delighted to be featured in the recent edition of the annual Mullucks Wells Property Magazine.
We were featured on page 16 as part of a double page spread in the “Spotlight on Saffron Walden” feature, which explored the way a historical market town has developed into a charming hot-spot for unique shopping experiences. Read the full piece online here.
Mullucks Wells described the Design Essentials store as ‘a treasure trove of unique and quirky items’, which we reckon captures our style pretty well!
Thanks once again to Mullucks Wells for the feature, and keep your eyes peeled on our blog for more Design Essentials appearances in the press.
Design Essentials were recently featured in an article on the website of Hope House Press, one of the newest ranges we are excited to have had in at the shop.
They said “We are a mixture of feeling excited and terrified at the prospect of being showcased in Design Essentials – Wendy Howell is a woman who means business and does business well. It’s a big thing for us to be hosted and given so many opportunities by her – the products stocked in the Saffron Walden Shop and also on their online portal are beautiful without exception. Wendy and her team are super picky about the ranges they host so we’re rather chuffed that they want us!”
Well, we can now confirm that we’re very happy to have Hope House Press on the shelves of our shop – they’ve done brilliantly on Not On The Highstreet and our customers have been loving their designs too!

Another month, another feature… Local magazines are absolutely loving our lighting at the moment, as Design Essentials have just been featured in the May edition of Velvet Magazine.
Our super popular pink colour therapy lamp was included in their ‘Fuchsia Focus’ collection alongside other hot pink interiors and gift ideas from retailers in the Cambridgeshire area.

Thanks so much for the feature, Velvet Mag – we love it!
We are delighted to reveal that Design Essentials has been featured in this month’s edition of Cambridge Magazine. We appear in the magazine’s Independent Cambridge retail feature for a review on home interiors. See the double page spread below.
Anne Beamish (@IndieCamb), one of the creators of the Independent shopping guide, penned the write-up. Thanks Anne – we love the fab photo of one of our vintage-style naked pendant lightbulbs.

We were very excited last week amidst all the national recognition we’ve been getting!
Not only did we win a national competition for our latest window display (which we also blogged about here – give it a read!), but we also received the copy of Your Home magazine that one of our customers’ kitchens was featured in.
We love getting mentions in the press, but this is particularly special for us since it’s actually an interior design magazine!
Little throwback moment… anyone remember when our fab pumpkin light was featured in Vogue magazine?! Remind yourselves and check out our blog post about it.
Here’s a picture of a very excited Wendy with our copy of Your Home magazine.
Our name was mentioned in the directory, and you may be able to spot our gorgeous glass bubble pendant lamp featured in the image below too! It’s a lovely unique piece, and at just £110 perfectly captures what we do here at Design Essentials – giving you beautiful yet affordable pieces for your home.
We were overwhelmed with support from our Facebook friends when we posted this update on Facebook. We’re even more excited than our customers to see what mentions like this could mean for the future of Design Essentials – hopefully all of it very exciting! (:

The special late night Christmas shopping event held last week was named the “best yet”.
Many shops kept their doors open from the morning until 8.30pm on Friday to help residents get the things they need in time for Christmas.
More than 30 charity stalls and a wide range of market square traders lined the streets of Saffron Walden as part of the event.
Father Christmas and his sleigh, organised by Round Table, also made a stop at the event to meet many children.
From 5.30pm, there was carol singing from the Saffron Walden Musical Theatre Company. Continue reading
We were delighted to be involved with a group of other businesses to give one happy couple their dream wedding.
Hero’s Wedding was an initiative launched last year by military wives Hayley Oats – who is based at Carver Barracks in Wimbish – and Emma Waring. Along with SEO expert Steve Hooper, the trio aimed to offer the complete wedding package to one couple based with the Forces.
The competition was open to the UK and entries flooded in from couples who told their love stories and reasons why they should win. In November, Leanne and Ross Allan were announced as the winners after receiving several thousand votes. Continue reading
